The FCI's Violent Crime Unit (VCU) is responsible for the forensic assessment and investigation of homicides, sex crimes, missing persons, forced disappearances, and questioned deaths referred to The Institute by attorneys, government agencies, and private entities.

Karla has been working with The Institute since late 2018 as our lead forensic investigator on cases involving femicide, and other violent crimes. She is also an instructor, giving lectures on her areas of expertise and providing logistical support.

Paul Ciolino, D-ABP


Paul is an internationally recognized private investigator and former lead homicide investigator for CBS 48 Hours.


Paul is also a veteran, having served seven years in the U.S. Army combat arms and military police. During this time, he became a member of the first civilian trained SWAT team. He left the service  a Sergeant. Later, he worked as the lead homicide and child molestation investigator for the State of Illinois’ Department of Children and Family services. During his tenure as a state investigator, he obtained over 200 written confessions. For a detailed bio, see PJC Investigations.


Paul is also Diplomate with the IAFC's Academy of Behavioral Profiling (D-ABP).

Currently, he conducts behavioral and crime scene analysis on cases of suspected femicide.
